Microgen: The New Generation of Testing

MicroGen Has Changed the Treatment Landscape.

If you think of the vaginal swab you do at the doctor’s as equivalent to the internet in the 1990s—it shows some information but it’s limited and often leaves out crucial details—then MicroGenDX is like the internet in 2025: fast, efficient, and able to show us nearly everything we need to know.

No more guessing! Those frustrating, recurrent infections that don’t respond to antibiotics or antifungal treatments? No problem. Those lingering UTIs with no apparent cause? We’ll find it.

Why MicroGen?

MicroGenDX uses a combination of qPCR (quantitative polymerase chain reaction) and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) to identify bacteria and fungi in a sample with 99.2% accuracy. It lists every species present and their relative abundance, detects antimicrobial resistance genes, and provides guidance on which treatments the microbes are most sensitive to. This advanced testing also helps reveal biofilms—protective layers that bacteria form to hide from standard treatments.

By contrast, traditional culture testing has only about a 50% chance of returning a “no growth” result and less than 30% accuracy in identifying the dominant species. This often leads to multiple doctor visits, trial-and-error treatments, and ongoing symptoms with little improvement.

What Is NGS?

Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is a modern DNA-based testing method that allows scientists to look directly at the genetic material of every microorganism in a sample. Instead of waiting for bacteria or fungi to grow in a lab dish (as with traditional cultures), NGS identifies them by reading their unique genetic “fingerprints.” This means it can detect even tiny amounts of microbes—including those that don’t grow well in culture—giving a far more complete and accurate picture of what’s really happening in your microbiome. Microgendx has over 60,000 referenced microbes in its database microbial database! That’s a lot, and ensures every possible infective organism can be accounted for.

Test Turnaround Time

MicroGenDX’s laboratory is based in the USA. For clients in New Zealand, samples typically take 6–10 days to arrive, and there’s no need for refrigeration. Once the sample is received, the rapid results are available within 24 hours, allowing me to interpret your results and to begin treating active infections quickly. A more detailed report follows a few days later.

Costs

The cost of the test is approximately $500 NZD. While that might seem like a significant upfront investment, it can actually reduce overall treatment costs by providing clear, targeted results—helping you resolve infections more efficiently.

The test must be ordered through a qualified practitioner (like me), who can interpret the findings and guide you through a tailored treatment plan for effective recovery.

If you would like to find out more about this revolutionary testing please book a FREE functional testing call (here) with me and we can see if Microgen is the right decision for you.
